Bio

Al Heidorn is a Minnesota-based independent songwriter, keyboardist, and producer blending rock, alternative, blues, Americana, and reflective storytelling into music shaped by memory, modern life, relationships, frustration, hope, and human connection.

Growing up in Hopkins, Minnesota in a deeply musical family, Heidorn was influenced early by his father — a jazz guitarist from Chicago — as well as his three brothers, all of whom shared a love for music. A trombone player through his school years, he found his way into rock bands as a teenager, developing a lifelong passion for keyboards, synthesizers, songwriting, and the intersection of music and technology. His musical influences range from progressive and fusion-rock pioneers like Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Level 42, and Steely Dan to artists such as Rush, Chicago, and The Cars.

Beyond performing and songwriting, Heidorn spent much of his professional career helping shape modern music technology and education. He worked at MakeMusic as a co-inventor of the SmartMusic product line and related music technologies connected to Finale, later contributing guitar pedagogy and controller technologies for the Jamstik platform at Zivix. He also spent time at Apple as a CoreAudio manager during the emergence of MIDI 2.0. Throughout it all, live performance and songwriting remained a constant thread.

Today, Heidorn focuses his energy on both live performance and original music projects. He performs with Midlife Crisis, 73 Paces, and DysFUNKtional while continuing to write and produce deeply personal music that moves fluidly between genres and styles. His work reflects a lifetime immersed in music — balancing technical precision with emotional honesty, cinematic atmosphere, and the perspective that only comes from years of playing, listening, building, and living.
